There’s nothing more traditional than Christmas and the foods we serve. From cookies to turkey, if there’s one thing you can always count on, is your favourite foods on the Christmas table. For most, it’s a large, beautiful turkey with plenty of mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and root vegetables. So today, we’re talking turkey tips. BUYING: Regardless of how many gather around your Christmas table, count on 1 ½ pounds of turkey per person. It may sound like an awful lot but remember there’s plenty of bones to be accounted for. If your bird is smaller, allow […]

Painful Tylenol!
The most painful part of my toothache was trying to get into the Tylenol wrapper! On a recent assignment to Mexico I flew from Toronto to Miami, from Miami to Cancun. I dislike flying because I’m old enough to remember what a pleasure it was. Anyway, on the flight to Miami, I was chewing gum on landing to avoid the whole pressure on the eardrum thing when, for some unknown reason, I had incredible pain on the right side of my jaw. It felt like an abscessed tooth with searing, radiating pain that just wouldn’t go away. Whoa! The […]
The Ontario Table Holiday Challenge
We all want to buy well during the holidays. It’s the season for giving, sharing, and emphasizing our values, traditions, and priorities. It’s the time of year we volunteer to help those less fortunate, to give generously to charity, and to help our neighbours. The season brings out the best in us, and we relish in the little acts that show we care. One little act to show you care is to buy local. Make this season a time to show your family and friends you are a conscious consumer by feasting on local foods and by […]
Bread – Make it Artisanal
If you’re a bread lover, nothing beats the tangy taste, the chewy texture, the waffling aromas, or freshly baked flavours of homemade bread. There is something magical about watching a simple loaf of bread rise to two, three or four times its original size, knowing it will bake into a crisp golden crust and fill the room with tantalizing aromas. As the yeasts turn the lump of dough into feather-light rolls or a crisp thin baguette, it’s easy to become intimidated about the process and think that bread is something only the most experienced should attempt. In a busy […]
The Great Pumpkin
This has been my year for pumpkins. I’ve made delicious pumpkin and pear soup almost every weekend in October, I served a to-die-for pumpkin crème brulèe at a dinner last weekend and I’ve made more pumpkin cookies with caramel glaze this year than any other year (it’s our October tradition). It’s pumpkin season and it feels good. Just last week I went into Harvest Barn in Niagara-on-the-Lake and owner Sue Enrich gave me a Jamaican pumpkin. It wasn’t a brilliant orange like our Canadian pumpkins and it was a bit flatter. “What can you do with it?” asked Sue […]
Help Keep The Ontario Table $10 Message Alive
The Canadian best seller, The Ontario Table, the best food from across the province and its $10 Challenge has caught the attention of Queen’s Park! How cool is that – it’s like David (me the sole culinary activist!) is now being offered a helping hand by Goliath (the highest levels of provincial government!). Earlier last week, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced proposed legislation that aims to boost sales of Ontario grow food. The intent of the Local Food Act was to celebrate and support local Ontario foods, produce, recipes, and food products. McGuinty quoted The Ontario Table’s $10 Challenge as […]
