The three P’s – pizza, pasta and paninis – that’s what you’ll find in abundance in the historic area of downtown Rome – and they’re so fantastic, you’ll want to try every single one of them! Best pizza is Il Fornaio just around the block from Piazza Fiori – by far the best pizza and you can tell from the over flowing crowds trying to get in each day. Another to try is Planet Pizza by the Trevi Fountain on Via de’ Crociferi. Best paninni’s. Panini in Italy is made from squares of flat bread that has been sliced […]
Quick + Easy = Delicious!
The most frequently asked question I get is what recipes do I have for quick and tasty meals? The answer always becomes more a discussion on having the right ingredients on hand and enjoying the activity of cooking than it does on specific recipes. Almost from the time I was born, I was interested in food, cooking and the pure enjoyment of eating with family and friends around the table. I would watch my mother and grandmother freeze, can and preserve the local harvests, bake bread, make pasta and simmer sauces. Even after 22 years as a food writer […]
Resolve To Have a Delicious New Year
It’s New Years Eve and after a glass of sparkling wine or two, past the stroke of midnight, in the presence of family and friends, we set unrealistic goals and deadlines that are doomed to failure because they’re made in the most unrealistic of circumstances. What a way to start off each new year! Instead, I plan on stretching my culinary muscle in 2013. I have a Pinterest board (http://pinterest.com/ontariotable/testing-new-recipes/) full of new recipes to be tested that include some decadent and impressive, some traditional and others elaborate. They appeal to my sense of flavour or better put, layering […]
The Christmas Market at Piazza Navona
Last year when my family and I spent Christmas in Paris I was taken with the Christmas Markets. These are hundreds of pretty white wooden sheds owned by individual vendors each selling something different. In Paris, the items were beautiful, useful and of quality. It was a delight with all the Christmas lights around and the soft sound of Christmas carols playing in the background. You could stroll through them with a cup of vin chaud (hot wine) or steaming thick hot chocolate. Strolling through it was beautiful, festive and even romantic. So as I made my way to […]
Christmas in Rome
I’m in Rome for the holidays with my husband, Jon and son, Jordan. Christmas trips for us are motivated by the crass commercialism that we find so offensive in North America. Last year we spent the holidays in Paris and the experience was so beautiful and peaceful, giving us a true Christmas experience that we now find it hard to stay home at this time of year. So we rent an apartment and off we go. This apartment in Rome is small – it’s pretty tiny. The advertising wasn’t really deceptive, it was just a bit neglectful. Neglectful of […]
Christmas Gifting
Many families don’t exchange gifts among adults any longer, but dropping the traditional gift giving is sometimes difficult. Our family is divided, some still buy (or make), others don’t and this creates a different kind of stress. But it’s not what you think. We’re a pretty creative family so the ones who give, give home-made gifts. They could be gifts of unique preserves, a sewn or quilted item, a wood crafted thing or what ever the passionate hobbiest is into at the time. It’s pretty nice. A new tradition with holiday celebrating is for everyone to contribute at least […]
