The Misfit, Santa Monica Everything seems larger in California and that’s the feeling one gets from walking into The Misfit Bar. The décor is ultra French posh with overly large dark woodwork, Parisian street light lamps, colourful mosaic floor tiles and an oversized, silver bar, imported from Paris. Its weight is not out of proportion to the towering 24-foot library bar that hosts an antique book library on the top layers and wine and liquors on the bottom. It’s probably the last place you’d expect to find classic California cuisine but manager Jackie McGuire explains that’s why it’s called […]
Eating My Way Through Los Angeles; Bouchon
Bouchon, a Thomas Keller restaurant In downtown Beverly Hills, sharing a beautiful park with the Montage (hotel), the newest luxury property in Beverly Hills, Bouchon is both a bakery and bistro. In romantic French style with tall ceilings, the décor includes Parisian street lights, white tablecloths, romantic ivory lace curtains, dark wood around ivory walls with an olive hue, distressed mirrors and an elaborate mosaic tiled floor. Bouchon is a Thomas Keller restaurant. The menu changes every 2 weeks and almost weekly during the summer as the concept is the celebration of neighbouring farmers or produce. On my visit […]
Eating My Way Through Los Angeles; The Market Restaurant
The Market Restaurant at JW Marriott I was staying at the new and beautiful JW Marriott at LA Live in Los Angeles. It’s part of a larger complex that includes the Staples center (where the Grammy’s are held), the Grammy Museum, a restaurant row and the giant convention center. In all the commercial support, it’s the last place you’d expect to find an amazing restaurant. Celebrity Chef Kerry Simon of Iron Chef fame runs this restaurant and brings his culinary style showcasing simple, exquisite California cuisine and featuring organic, seasonal ingredients. I asked chef Kerry about his Iron Chef […]
Eating My Way Through Los Angeles; Universal Studios
Universal Studios On the outskirts of Hollywood is the massive Universal Studios which is both a theme park and the actual working, television studios where films and tv shows are magically made. Tonight the entire complex was closed down for a private party and I was going. With a head count of over 6,000 it’s often difficult to prepare a dinner that would please on a quality level, but who would have thought that Universal’s Executive Chef Eric Kopelow could create a magnificent dinner with as much surprise and drama as they create in the movies. Throughout the park […]
Eating My Way Through Los Angeles; The Pantry Cafe
The Pantry Ok, everyone needs to eat a good breakfast, so why is it so difficult to find? If you’ve read my blogs before you know I’m a big fan of hotel concierge. I’m at the JW Marriott at LA Live and these guys are second to none! They send us down to The Pantry, a Los Angeles culinary institution. The restaurant is a typical 1970’s soda-style diner that sits in the heart of Los Angeles amid the modern glitz and glamour of the convention centre, theatres and LA Live. The Pantry serves breakfast 24 hours a day and […]
Eating My Way Through Los Angeles; Le Pain Quotidien
Le Pain Quotidien I stumbled across this French bakery, café while walking the streets of Santa Monica. The window display of crusty breads drew me inside. The dessert case with giant meringues and tiny blueberry cream tarts sealed the deal – I was staying! Behind the restaurant kitchen, the walls are distressed brick with unfinished wooden tables. One giant 15-foot wooden communal table sat down the centre of the long restaurant – how delightfully inviting. The place was classic California clean, posh and decadent. The restaurant is owned by chef Alain Coumont who now has 13 other locations throughout […]
