Washington, DC is nothing if not rife with politics. When we asked permission to take photographs it was no surprise to get this answer, “as long as no one complains. After all, this is DC and most often there are people dining here with someone they shouldn’t to be seen with.” In fact, at Marcel’s on Pennsylvania Ave NW, there is a small circular room that is made more secretive with a curtain that encloses the entire table. “It was Petraeus’s table table,” we’re told with a giggle. Marcel’s is one of Washington’s high-end restaurants that focuses on finding […]
DC Coast Delicious
I’m in Washington, DC for a food press trip and eating gourmet morning, noon and night. I’ve eaten at fine dining opulent restaurants and casual, I’ve had Oprah Winfrey’s chef cook for me and gone out with a colleague of Julia Childs. It’s been a great feast of the senses in a city I’ve fallen head over heals in love with. Jon and I waked into this beautiful restaurant and came face to face with a sea of black suits. Apparently Newt Gingrich has an office right upstairs along with many powerful lobbyists so you never know who you’re […]
Stratus Vineyard Tasting
One would think that there isn’t much happening in Niagara on a dull, cool, March, Wednesday afternoon, and they may be right. Except at Stratus Vineyards on Niagara Stone Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake they’re changing up the tired old winter blues with a magnificent wine tasting. It was a private affair, 4 wine writers, Suzanne Janke, Director of Hospitality for Stratus and Retail and JL Groux, Stratus Winemaker. Many of you know Stratus as the best in assemblage wines. JL Groux is a master at blending, but today was different. Today was a tasting of some very rare, limited edition […]

Then a few duck […]
Guilty of Coconut Torte Crimes
Ok, I got caught. Wouldn’t you know it! I decided one day to take a look at all the foods that are honoured with a “National Day”. You know, National Hot Dog Day or Maple Syrup Day. All those days that bring our thoughts to one single food. Why? Well, statistics show that we all unconsciously eat the same 10 foods over and over again. I find this a real crime – a national offense of the greatest kind. National days honouring food is a great way to distract us from routine and expand our culinary thinking. I decided […]
Memories of Paris Mushrooms
I remember the place, the smells, the sights, the sounds and the flavours. It was Paris, the rain had given the air a smell of freshness while the December air gave it a sense of invigorating briskness. Christmas lights lite up the Champs Elysees while Zucchero played on the public sound system. It was here in the Christmas Market where we first tasted the most magnificent, magical mushrooms. The vendor had a giant cauldron of mushrooms swimming in thick cream. He took a huge ladle and scooped some of the steaming mushrooms into a cup. One for me, one […]
